The tedium of the activities on the island is exacerbated by the pitiful nature of the rewards received for completing them. And when you see the same things repeat albeit with minor variations, the Golden Isle becomes suffocating, feeling far smaller than its actual size. Every activity becomes tedious because it repeats so frequently. It’s as if there was a fear that any empty space would cause players to become bored. Dozens upon dozens of treasure chests, collectibles, puzzles, dungeons, and the occasional quest dot the landscape, but there is no space on the island for anything to breathe or merely exist. Yet despite the art style, the world may as well be painted in greyscale because that colour does not make up for how overstuffed it. The Golden Isle is vibrantly coloured, with seven different colour coded biomes to traverse and climb. After only a few hours, it becomes exhausting.Īt least the world is pretty to look at. It’s as if everyone in Immortals is a second or two away from turning towards the camera and winking. I found each and every character, from Fenyx themselves to Hermes and beyond, to be annoying and unlikeable because a line rarely goes by without someone setting up a joke or pun. That is a particularly bad example, but that tone is consistent throughout the events of the story. Zeus: She should have inspired them to create an elevator! Prometheus: Athena’s wisdom inspired mortals to create beautiful clothing and garb to wear. As an example, here is a line of dialogue between the two that occurs as Fenyx is climbing a statue of Athena that is only slightly paraphrased: Each and every conversation between the narrators will feature a joke, and they occur with such frequency that they become tiresome. I say humorous, but I found the game’s attempt at lightheartedness to be grating instead.

But even during parts that should be funny, the characters’ animations and faces just aren’t expressive enough to make it work. It was fun to see Ares, the god of war, transformed into a cowardly chicken. Some of the game’s antics are at least a bit amusing. They bicker back and forth and insult each other, with much of the attempted humor focusing on Zeus’s arrogance and poor relationship with his family. I never found much of it funny.Ī lot of this attempted humor comes from the narrators, the titan Prometheus and father of the gods, Zeus. It bombards you with sarcasm, puns, and jokes. The world is big and fun to explore, but I’m not crazy about Immortals tone. This gives you a good excuse to travel out to every corner of the world, and it’s always fun to enter a new area, see a giant god or goddess statue, and then scale up it so that you can start a new part of the story and begin scouting out landmarks and activities. You also have the main quest to go through, which has you rescuing Greek gods so you can enlist their help in defeating the monster Typhon. You can find a good deal variety throughout the world. Others have you figuring sliding puzzles, while some will just test your combat abilities. Some have you shooting arrows through hoops, à la Odysseus. You can spend hours just doing side activities, all of which are fun.

It offers a giant world that you can explore with few limitations on where you can go. A big, fat, Greek open worldĪt its core, Immortals will be appealing for the same reason so many people enjoyed Breath of the Wild. Each challenge has a solution that the game wants you to use, and that’s almost always how you’re going to have to go about it. Immortals is also less freeform than Breath of the Wild, a game that had crazy physics and chemical reactions that let you mess around with things like fire, lightning, kinetic motion, and gravity to travel and beat down your foes. Fenyx is also a bit more agile than Link, and many of the game’s puzzles take advantage of Immortals’ solid jumping mechanics. It focuses on dodging, countering, and stunning enemies with heavy attacks until you stagger them. However, Immortals does stand out in some ways.
