
Linnea Design operates in partnership with Madison Park Greetings, a leading stationery and gift manufacturer for the past 30 years that offers independently owned companies a unique opportunity to work together. In addition to designing travel posters and calendars for Linnea Design, Johanna Kriesel has been a web designer for Microsoft and artist for clients such as Robert Mondavi Winery, Discovery Channel, Oregon Travel Bureau, and Museum of Natural History in New York. Linnea has written and illustrated four children’s books and designs greeting cards and stationery from her lovingly restored 1900’s carriage house in Seattle, Washington. Now, as she looks forward to taking on new artistic challenges, she’s proud to leave her much-loved calendar business in the very capable hands of her daughter. Linnea’s home-grown business helped her raise two girls and put them through college. Linnea Riley started her calendar company in 1986 in Aspen, Colorado with her husband Michael and two daughters.

Drat! Who needs two Aprils, especially when it’s August? So I called Abacus (800.206.2166 or visit the Web site at and the folks there graciously sent another 2008 calendar, plus I got an early chance to order 2009. But this year when it was time for August 2008, I found April 2008 instead.

You display it in a plastic easel and each month when you change the page, you get this wonderful illustration of New England life. The illustrator, Dana Heacock, paints from photos he takes of churches, dogs, flowers and other everyday southern Maine scenes. Love it! Ever since that Christmas, I’ve always ordered myself the next year’s calendar - the illustrations are so cheerful, homelike and cozy. One Christmas Zanny gave me this wonderful desktop calendar from Abacus Publishing in Boothbay Harbor, Me. My brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Zanny, live in Portland, Me., and are the New England branch of the Southern-bound Wood family.
